AUTUMN

The letting go of Autumn is one of the qualities we experience entering this season. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM, autumn resembles the contracting and expanding properties of the metal element as it expands with heat and contracts when cold and governs our Lungs and having the courage to let go. This is a purging season, a transition to expelled the bad and hold in the good, to prepare the body for regeneration and rest during the winter months.

Did you know that you can help your liver to reach its potential in the Autumn months? that you can help your body shed all that does not longer needs and all the accumulated toxins acquired in the glorious summer months by doing some simple qigong practices for 3 weeks on a row? or that an emotional state such is sadness and grief can be detrimental for your lungs organs? Furthermore, what does that mean for a westerner (with no knowledge of TCM or Qi-gong)? What role do the lungs play not only on your health, but also on your overall wellbeing and organizational skills? As I studied the relationship of seasonal changes with the peoples’ customs around the world, I realized that each culture have their own definitions but they all meet at one point: protect from the cold and keep the body internally and externally warm. These relations takes the form of herbal medicines, warming foods, body movement practices like Qi-gong, yoga, and others,  to strengthen and tonify the lungs to avoid the corresponding illnesses that affect the respiratory system.  The Metal element in itself is contracting and expanding in accordance to heat or cold. If there is an excess of cold, the metal will become stiff and inflexible. In the same manner the Lungs will contract and freeze.

To accommodate ourselves to the times and to what this transitory body of multiple living beings needs, there is a myriad of practices and forms from different cultures… you only have to choose one that fits you the most. This „ancient“ knowledge is the most accurate based on thousands of years of research and development provided by the ancient tribes from west and east, north and south of the globe.

HERBST
